Description: Fresh from the success of his sitcom, comedian Jerry Seinfeld decided to do the unimaginable: he completely retired his stand-up act, electing to start over again by developing entirely new material. "Comedian" follows Seinfeld through this process, as he rehearses in front of small comedy club audiences, meets with fellow comics and finally appears before a national audience.
Comments: Greetings again from the darkness. What a fascinating, behind the scenes look at the struggles of building a stand-up comedy routine - even if one happens to be a comedic genius like Jerry Seinfeld. We are allowed to see a bit of the grinding and stress involved with testing one's ideas in front of a live audience. Really nice conversations between Seinfeld and Collin Quinn, Jay Leno, Garry Shandling, and Robert Klein. Chris Rock turns Seinfeld onto Bill Cosby's marathon comedy act. We see the admiration Seinfeld has for the great Cosby as he says knowing Cosby is a highlight of his career. Shandling and Seinfeld discuss the power of Johnny Carson. It does not appear Leno or Letterman has been able to capture such power or admiration of today's comedians. The film really shows the importance of consistent work on the material and delivery. The obnoxious Orny Adams takes up way more time and space than necessary, but he does represent the ego necessary to survive the constant work that builds a comedian's following and career. Super Agent Shapiro provides proof of how he EARNS his money. He coddles Seinfeld and Adams and with great finesse makes his points ... often through the words of others. Don't be surprised if Seinfeld conquers the comedy world again in the near future.
