Rhode Island is Killing me...

In all the gas stations I have been to in Rhode Island, there is never the little latch which let's you let the pump flow on its own. Obviously its safe because it seems like the 49 other states in the union use it with no problem. Having no latch means that you have to stand there holding the lever the entire time. This means you'll freeze your fingers off when it's cold and you never get to wash your windshield while the car is filling. That's why I came up with the genius idea to stick my wallet under the handle. I've been doing it for 2 years now and the pump always shuts off on its own, but now it looks like I better stop doing it or I might explode. Apparently they've thought about the issue, but for some reason the thought of actually attaching these devices scares Rhode Island. At least I don't live in New Jersey, where they don't allow civilians to attempt this complex task of filling their own gas.
