I Hear Canada Is Nice This Time Of Year

Are you ready to go to war in Iraq? And I don't mean "you" in the general sense, I mean you personaly, are you ready to go to war? A recent topic of debate centers on two bills introduced in the House and Senate requiring 2 years minimum military service for both men and women. Read more....

The bills in question were introduced last year, and were in fact introduced by opponents of the war in Iraq, however it is still an interesting question to consider. To support our ongoing military commitments worldwide should we have a draft? And should the draft inculde women as well as men? If we had a draft and you got drafted Jesse, would you still be in favor of the war? Bryant? My guess: you wouldn't last 10 minutes in the Army.

Noah, if i were drafted into the army, they would immediately recognize my value as an intellectual and would immediately make me part of the intelligence effort.
If for some reason they recognized my robotic building expertise, they would put me in charge of building unmanned vehicles.
If for some reason they recognized me for my asian ness they would immediately put me in the ninja unit.

Seeing as how I have all these perfect fits that I would be perfectly happy with in the war, I find it hard to believe that i would only last "10 minutes" in the army.

I think this is a great idea. You've got to keep in mind, however, that they aren't going to just throw everyone into combat. If there are enough people in the military now who have elected to go into combat, I believe that the number of unwilling combatants would be minimal.

Among the social benefits that such a plan would provide is the higher level of scrutiny concerning war decisions. If every mother in America knew that their son might be sent into combat, they would be less willing to support an unjustified war.

Furthermore, I believe that mandatory military service would result in a greater sense of pride for our nation, something which is greatly lacking today--and only seemed to be revitalized in the wake of the 9/11 attacks.

Will a bill such as this ever get passed? Probably not. But, it certainly forces one to think about the potential costs of enjoying the freedom we currently possess.

How about a serious response from Bryant and Jesse. ?

in response to Joe's comment "If there are enough people in the military now who have elected to go into combat, I believe that the number of unwilling combatants would be minimal.
"

this is a quote from an article about the proposed draft:

"Critics say the bills are merely a reaction to recent estimates that the United States will need over 250,000 troops in order to maintain stability in Iraq. There have already been mass redeployments of reserve troops to replace battle-weary soldiers in Iraq, and many active-duty soldiers have stated they will not re-enlist in the military after their time is up."

Is Jesse out last and best line of defence???

first of all noah im like thousand times stronger and in better shape than you are noah.

second they will not re-engage the draft. It is rather pointless. we pay to have an army for a reason, because to train the best troops is hard and takes a whole lotta money. Therefore, none of joe's comments make sense. We want only the best and the most willing out there fighting at all costs. Training the physically inept, like noah, would just raise taxes.

Third, bryant is right too. Those with the most degrees/intellegence prolly would not be stuck in the frontlines. Those who are the smartest need to remote control bombs, look after sattlittes, be doctors, and lastly and most importantly be ninjas.

hahahahahahahaha..."and lastly and most importantly be ninjas." that is great...hahahahahaha

I think before a draft is enacted, the war will be privatized.

We already have companies like Blackwater in Iraq doing security detail for non-military personnel. We have UAV's like the predator that were made by private companies doing aerial recon and soon they will be able to deliver a payload. And we have people doing supply lines to the military like Halliburton.

Maybe privitization of a lot of costs will let some people understand that spending money on defense is not money that is being thrown away, rather money that is being reinvested in America and creating jobs.

Based on this quote from John Kerry.com, new draftees from this bill could be the first to go:

"...our Army is stressed to the breaking-point. John Kerry will temporarily increase the size of the active-duty Army by 40,000 troops so that we have the force structure for the challenges we face."

So here's what happens: Democrats put a bill in place making military service mandatory, expecting leaders like Bush to not go to war. Instead, they're own candidate gets into office, and immediately increases the amount of troops in Iraq. Who do the Democrats blame now?

see noah i told you it was wrong to be a democrat... you never listin...

And I told YOU not to write at a 4th grade level!

I personally wouldn't mind having women being forced to enlist. A girl/friend (don't combine the two) once said, "I didn't walk that march."-- referring to women's rights. They got their rights, now come the responsibilities. Equal rights for all! Ninjas, women, robots, everybody.

Yes, ninjas and robots are severely oppressed in our day...what about the robots, don't they deserve equal rights as well???

(Say, for instance, the "right" to marry other robots whom they are "in love" with...and all the benefits and priveledges that go along with that marriage.)
